Apéro au Meursault
Recap of a wonderful night filled with great wines and great people.
The wine lineup was solely composed of White wines from the Meursault appellation. With vintages dating back to 2015 with a bottle of “Meursault-Blagny” from legendary producer Antoine Jobard, formerly known as Domaine Francois Jobard, his father.
All 14 wines really showed well and gave a nice overview of the appellation. Edouard’s table focused on the famous trio of climats “Charmes”, “Genévrières”, “Perrières”, tasted in that order. The highlights seemed to be on the “Charmes Jadot 2017”. Interestingly, among the 2 “Perrières” tasted (Heitz-Lochardet 2018 and Ballot-Millot 2017) it is once again the 2017 that sang more clearly and probably won best wine of the whole flight for that table. It really displayed the typical richness associated with Meursault. Brioche and hazelnut with a hint of citrus, lifted by vivid minerality. Another great bottle was the “Genévrières” from Maison Bouchard. A superb wine from the high yielding 2018 vintage.
Raj’s table was not short of great wines either. The climats represented there covered the northern part of the appellation, closer to another famous village, Volnay. We started off with two expressions of 2018: the Climat “Criots”, named after the term “crais” in reference to its high proportion of gravel, by Ballot Millot followed by the Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s monopoly “Clos de la Barre”, a vineyard that is essentially the backyard of Dominique Lafon’s house. The best wine of the table was probably the superb 2017 Pierre Morey “Tessons”. This climat was made famous by Jean-Marc Roulot, and especially his father Guy, who started bottling it separately early on under the name “Tessons, Clos de Mon Plaisir”. The flight ended with 4 wines from the powerful 2015 vintage. Ballot-Millot’s “Bouchères”, Génot Boulanger’s “Bouchères”, de Montille’s “Porusots” and Olivier Leflaive’s “Porusots”. De Montille probably won wine of the flight thanks to its explosive personality and texture.
